Chemical compatibility

A screening chart for FFKM as a polymer class, organised by media family — including the cases where it is not suitable.

Ratings describe the behaviour of the FFKM polymer class in the named medium. They are a screening aid, not a design approval. Note the documented exceptions: fuming nitric acid, fluorine (F₂), chlorine trifluoride (ClF₃) and high-pressure wet oxygen will attack FFKM. Concentration, temperature, immersion duration, pressure and mechanical stress all change the result. For any medium not listed here, send us the concentration, temperature and duration and we will return a written assessment.

A
Excellent

No significant attack. Suitable for continuous service at the grade's rated temperature.

B
Good

Minor effect on volume or weight over long exposure. Acceptable for most static service.

C
Conditional

Swelling or surface degradation. Use only with the temperature and duration limits confirmed in writing.

U
Not recommended

Rapid attack. Do not specify FFKM for this medium without a written engineering review.

Organic acids 4

FFKM's principal strength. Resistance is broad across this family.

Organic acids
Acetic acid A
Formic acid A
Propionic acid A
Trichloroacetic acid A

Inorganic acids 6

Hydrochloric and phosphoric are fine. Hot fuming oxidising acids are the documented exception.

Inorganic acids
Hydrochloric acid (HCl) A
Sulphuric acid (concentrated) B
Nitric acid (dilute) B
Nitric acid, fuming / red fuming U
Hydrofluoric acid (HF) B
Phosphoric acid A

Solvents 8

This is where FFKM decisively outperforms FKM, which is limited in ketones, esters and amines.

Solvents
Acetone A
Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) A
Toluene / xylene A
Dichloromethane A
Diethyl ether A
Ethyl acetate A
Tetrahydrofuran (THF) A
N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) A

Amines & amines / amine salts 4

A common failure point for FKM. FFKM retains compatibility, but wet-process duties should be reviewed for amine additives.

Amines & amines / amine salts
Ammonia (aqueous) A
Ethylenediamine A
Dimethylformamide (DMF) A
Piperidine B

Petroleum & hydrocarbons 5

Petroleum & hydrocarbons
Crude oil A
Diesel / fuel oil A
Mineral oil A
Synthetic ester (phosphate) B
LPG / sour gas (H₂S) B

Oxidisers & special gases 8

Two genuine exceptions live here. Confirm with engineering before specifying.

Oxidisers & special gases
Oxygen (dry) A
Oxygen (wet / high pressure) C
Hydrogen peroxide (concentrated) C
Chlorine (dry) B
Fluorine (F₂) U
Chlorine trifluoride (ClF₃) U
Semiconductor process gases (NF₃, CF₄, CHF₃) B
Plasma / RF etch environment B

Water, steam & coolants 5

Water, steam & coolants
Deionised water A
Boiling water A
Steam (saturated, short exposure) B
Ethylene glycol / glycol brine A
Ultrapure water (semiconductor) A

High purity & electronics 4

Rating here is about the elastomer's outgassing and extractables behaviour, not chemical attack.

High purity & electronics
Ammonia plasma (PECVD) B
Photoresist solvents A
TMAH developer A
HF vapour B
